Prostitutes Invade Defunct Cape Coast Post Office

INFORMATION GATHERED by the DAILY HERITAGE reveals that the post office built by Ghanas first president, Dr Kwame Nkrumah in Cape Coast in 1960 is being occupied by prostitutes and squatters. The facility which is in ruins has been rented out to the squatters for less than GHc20.00 as a shelter and to do brisk commercial sex business. The Cape Coast office which is situated near the Cape Coast Castle is rotting away due to several decades of neglect. Checks by the paper indicate that the facility was taken over by squatters when the post office became defunct. The postal service is now an eyesore of dusty, loose hanging electrical wires, wall cracks and weak wooden structures. Most of the windows of the building are falling off and the dusty ceiling has been ripped off. Because of the proximity of the post office to the sea, every metal surface at the site has corroded but its a safe haven for craftsmen to display their wares. A casual look at the whole edifice suggests the post office hasnt been painted for decades and that has emboldened squatters resolve to claim ownership of the place. The post office was built on November 4, 1960 by Dr. Nkrumah to mark the countrys giant step into industrialization and modernity but, unfortunately it has seen no renovation.
