The Progressive People’s Party has threatened to take a legal action against the Electoral Commission (EC) over its decision to give priority to the two main political parties on the 10-member committee established to propose electoral reforms ahead of the 2016 general elections.
The ruling National Democratic Congress and the main opposition New Patriotic Party have been given two slots each on the committee while the 22 other minority parties have all together been given two slots as well.
The Committee is mandated to study the various reforms and advise the EC on its implementation.
Speaking to Citi FM yesterday, the General Secretary of the PPP Kofi Asamoah Siaw said the other minority parties in the country feel slighted in the composition of the committee.
“We have considered going to court to see if we could have an injunction placed on the work of the committee,” he stated.
He wondered “why would they give two political parties two slots each and give the other 22 parties two slots?
“We need to test the law on this exercise of independent right that the EC always goes for,” he added.
