Sekondi Road Caves In

A portion of the Sekondi-Takoradi stretch of road also known as Beach Road at Asemansiwdo   near the BP junction, has caved in, posing a threat to road users.

To ensure that vehicles are not involved in accidents, some of the youth in the area last Saturday blocked the road with pieces of wood, cement blocks and tyres.

The aggrieved youth also used some of the materials to cover the portion of the road which had caved in.

They therefore appealed to the authorities concerned to urgently address the problem to avoid loss of lives.

“Urgent action is needed to forestall any imminent catastrophe”, they pointed out.

They noted that apart from the portion that caved in, the other side of the road was also weak and needed prompt action to be taken on it.

The Sekondi beach road is one of the busiest roads in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis.

Experts say if nothing was done immediately, there could be a serious tragedy because of the heavy traffic the road carries.

Speaking to DAILY GUIDE, some of the residents explained that they decided to block the road because most motorists had not noticed the danger and kept plying the road.

One of the youth, popularly called Joe Bee, who took the paper round the danger spot, indicated that if nothing was done immediately it could lead to a serious fatality.

The current traffic on the road, he said, was too much and believed that was not factored into the initial design of the road.

He expressed the hope that the authorities would not wait for any accident before coming to save the situation.

“The best solution, the experts said, was to close the road to traffic to allow for repair works,” he added.

He appealed to the media to create the needed awareness to alert road users to avoid any accident.

Attempts to get officials of urban roads for their comments on the problem proved unsuccessful.
