Police On High Alert To Prevent A Bloody Clash Over Bolga-Naba Chieftaincy Dispute

Some five persons who sustained deep cutlass wounds on Saturday in Bolgatanga following an attack by some unidentified gang, are still receiving treatment at the Upper East Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga.

The five were among some elders and sub chiefs who were attacked at a suburb called Atulbabisi, on their way to the Bolga-Naba’s Palace.

Police is working hard to get the people who attacked the bus with registration number GR 3081 N. Prior to the attack there had been a rumour that, some elders and sub-chiefs in the traditional area had gathered at the Chief’s Palace to install the Regent of the Bolgatanga Paramount Skin, Raymond Abilba, the new Bolga-Naba. Per the explanation from elders at the Palace, the rumour had no iota of truth in it. The gathering was just a family meeting and not a ceremony to install a Bolga-Naba.

If any ceremony had been organized to enskin a new Bolga-Naba it would have gone against a letter issued by the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs, restraining all activities towards the enskinment of a new Chief for the Bolgatanga Traditional Area.

All has not been well between the Atulbabisi royals and the family of the late Bolga-Naba Martin Abilba II. However there seem to be no problem between other royals and the family of the late Bolgatanga Chief. The Regent seem to enjoy majority support from the “King makers” in the Bolgatanga Traditional Area.

The Bolgatanga Paramount Skin has been vacant since September 2013, following the death of Bolga-Naba Martin Adongo Abilba, on September 26, 2013 at the age 68. The late Bolga-Naba reigned for close to 42 years after inheriting is father.

The Upper East Regional Police Command has stationed some police personnel at the Palace and the Atulbabisi community to prevent a possible clash and to provide security lives and property in these suburbs. The Regional Police P.R.O, ASP Thomas Yao Agbenyo, said the presence of the personnel was immediate solution to a possible clash.

Municipal Chief Executive for Bolgatanga, Edward Ayagle has called for calm between the two royal families as members of MUSEC and REGSEC meet with opinion leaders to find an amicable solution to the tension.
