PMMC Board Defend MDs Gh32,000 Monthly Salary

In spite of the moral justification issues raised by some workers of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company(PMMC) over the Managing Director’s supposed fat salary of Gh¢32,000.00, the Board Chairman of PMMC Brigadier General Charles Richter- Addo has held a press conference to defend the Gh¢32,000 salary as the lowest amongst MD’s colleagues in the sector.

The Managing Director of PMMC, Mr George Abradu -Otoo takes a monthly basic salary of Gh¢24,000 and a Gross of Gh¢32,100.

There has been mixed reaction amongst staff of the company with regard to the huge salary approved for the MD at a time that the company is seriously hemorrhaging in terms of management and financing.

The Chairman’s Press Conference was precipitated by an earlier report filed by the Daily Guide newspaper under the caption ‘ROT AT PMMC’ which didn’t quite go down well with the board and hence that response.

Speaking at a press briefing over the issue, the Board Chairman said “before we accepted or granted this amount of money, we did investigations into how much MD’s of state enterprises are taking and came to a conclusion that he should be paid this amount and its about the lowest in the industry.

It is the Board that determines how much the MD should be paid and we think it is fair and prudent that he should be paid this amount of money.”

However, it is quite revealing that the MD’s predecessor Mr. Damptey was taking a basic salary of GH¢9,000.00 and Gross salary of Gh¢15,000.00 and was accused of taking so much and yet no significant management was brought to bare on the company.

In his reaction, the MD said the security department of the company has been outsourced and the workers would be absorbed into the security company that would be contracted to takeover. He noted that workers who have no interest in joining the new security company would be compensated and urged them to show up for deliberations on the issues.

He also rejected the claim that the board of the company has increased its sitting and monthly allowances. “We have not increased our sitting allowances it has rather been reduced. Each and every member of the board takes less than GHC1000, and that is a fact.”

Meanwhile the other documents and details of the closed down Diamond Company and the gold refinery of the PMMC and other matters are carefully being studied and will be published soon.
