A parade of school children and voluntary organizations to mark the 58th Independence Anniversary celebration in the Agona East District, came to a halt for some time, when the District Police Commander, Superintendent Nana Ekow Yawson, who was among the five personalities taking the salute, collapsed .
Some police personnel on duty quickly put him into his car and rushed him to hospital, where he later regained his consciousness, but was unable to come back and continue with the celebration.
The four other personalities who took the salute, were the Deputy Central Regional Minister and Member of Parliament for Agona East, Mrs Queenster Pokuaa Sawyer, Mr Francis Duodu Addo. Agona East District Chief Executive (DCE), Dr Abudulai Salam Alhaji, District Director of Education, and Mr Kennedy Abudulai, District Coordinating Director.
A total of 32 primary, junior, and senior high schools, took part in the parade held at the Agona Nsaba Presbyterian Junior High School Park.
Addressing the parade, Mrs Sawyer announced that 50 teachers in the Agona East would be honoured on July 1, at a special award ceremony she had instituted to encourage teachers to give of their best to improve education.
She said five best teachers each in Science, Fante, and ICT would be honoured.
According to the Deputy Central Regional Minister, best pupils and students would also be honoured on that day..
Mrs Sawyer said the special award has been earmarked to coincide with her birthday which falls on July 1.
She urged the people of Agona East to unite, to ensure the development of the area.
The Deputy Regional Minister said government was doing everything possible to ensure that challenges facing the economy, especially the energy sector, were solved to improve the livelihood of the people.
Mr Addo, DCE for Agona East, said the government has been supplying a number of free school uniforms, exercise books and other teaching materials to ensure effective teaching and learning.
He said over 250 students have received scholarships from the Deputy Central Regional Minister, Mrs Sawyer, to pursue further education at the secondary level.
According to the DCE, five CHIP compounds are currently under construction in the district, to enhance quality health care delivery.
