Residents of Korle Gonno in Accra are upset over the indiscriminate dumping of human excreta into drains by neighbours who do not have places of convenience in their homes.
They have therefore appealed to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to send their Environmental Health Officers over to inspect and summon households in the area who do not toilet facilities.
They believe this would curb the menace of people dumping human excreta in black polythene bags into the gutters.
This came to light when Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, the Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive joined the residents at Korle Gonno to clean the area of filth during the National Sanitation Day on Saturday.
Dr Vanderpuije asked the people to continue supporting the AMA to maintain environmental cleanliness and urged them to step up the education on sanitation to stop the act and prevent the spread of diseases.
“Keeping the environment clean is the responsibility of every resident in the communities,” he stressed.
The AMA Boss later directed Dr Simpson Anim Boateng, the Director of the Department of Health of the AMA, to issue summons to all households in the Ablekuma South District who do not have toilets in their homes.
Mr Djangba Vanderpuye, the Deputy Greater Accra Regional Minister, who accompanied the Accra Mayor, said the objective of the National Sanitation Day was to keep the communities clean by the people themselves.
“Together we can clean our environment and develop the attitude of self-responsibility,” he added.
Two opinion leaders in the Korle Gonno community, Mr David Ardey Tackie and Mr Chris Akushey told the Ghana News Agency that they were happy to hear that summons would be issued to residents without places of convenience in their homes.
