National Sanitation Day Is A Joke Owusu Bempah

A deputy National Communication Director of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Ernest Owusu Bempah Bonsu has described as ‘a complete joke’ and waste of time and resources the much touted National Sanitation Day.

The NDP firebrand stated that he was finding difficult to comprehend why authorities after paying people to do clean up would still call Ghanaians to the streets to clean up.

“My problem is that why are we spending so much money on national sanitation? We have the people who are mandated to clean the cities, where are they? What happened to our decentralization system…?” he quizzed.

The National Sanitisation Day which is organized on the first Saturday of every month aims at helping bring out the citizenry to help clean neighbourhoods.

The programme, which was initiated as part of solutions to last year’s cholera outbreak, is now being organized on a regional basis monthly. Last month’s edition was held in the Volta Region.

However, Owusu Bempah said on TV3 on Monday that it was just wrong, insisting people who are mandated to do so must be made to work.

“Am sorry to say is a joke too…even though the idea is good…the systems must work…,” he added.

He added, it was prudent for the municipalities to ensure that people mandated to provide sanitation services work to merit the monies they earn.

A co-panelist on the show, James Kwabena Domfeh of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), said he was also aware that the government always granted the NDC leadership in the regions resources to organize party members for the task.

“If we are calling for national sanitation programme, let it be…,” he said.

He further called on the Local Government Ministry to release all funds meant for the clean up to the Assemblies to do their job.
