Minister Offers To Assist Drop Out To Go Back To School

Mrs Queenster Pokuaa Sawyer, the Deputy Central Regional Minister, has instituted a sponsorship scheme dubbed “go back to school” for senior high school dropouts in the Agona East constituency who will wish to go back to school.

The Deputy Minister, who is also Member of Parliament for Agona East, said the move was to ensure that all SHS students, especially girls who have dropped out of school, go back to school.   Ms Sawyer made this known when she delivered a speech at the 8th speech and prize giving day and 24th Anniversary celebration of Kwanyako Senior High and Technical School at Agona Kwanyako.

The Deputy Minister said she would pay for the tuition and accommodation of such students until they write their final examinations.  She said she had tasked the District Chief Executive for Agona East, Mr Francis Duodu Addo, to comb every village and town to persuade dropouts especially girls to register.

The Deputy Minister appealed to the parents, especially mothers whose daughters have delivered and as a result could not continue, to take care of the babies for their mothers to go to school.   Mrs Sawyer said she had engaged Mathematics, Science and English tutors, to teach students in the three core subjects that students found difficult to pass.

Mrs Angelina Ocansey, the Headmistress, said the major challenge facing the School was inadequate classrooms.  She said the student population stood at 1,514 made up of 730 boys and 784 girls 789 are boarders.   The Headmistress appealed to the government, corporate organizations and foreign donors to assist the school with transportation.

She said due lack of accommodation, tutors commuted from Agona Swedru to Agona Kwanyako, a situation she said impeded effective teaching and learning.  Mrs Ocansey commended Mrs Sawyer for the construction of a classroom block for the school and appealed to other Agona citizens to emulate her shining example.

Mrs Ocansey said the School beat Holy Child Senior High School in Cape Coast in the Regional Science quiz and had subsequently qualified for the national competition.
