The former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, has underscored the importance of education to the development of the nation and the society.
She stated that it is in this regard that the constitution of country calls for equal access to education for every Ghanaian, irrespective of his or her religious or ethnic and political backgrounds.
The former First Lady made the call when she addressed the First Open Day of the 31st December Women Movement (DWM) school at Agona Swedru in the Central region.
Mrs Rawlings advised parents and guardians to invest in their children’s education, and forget about purchasing expensive funeral cloths and other unnecessary things.
She emphasized the vital role education plays in the lives of the children, adding that it can help reduce poverty.
Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings asked parents and teachers to team up and offer quality training to their children, so that they will become assets to the nation.
She called for the proper training of children, saying that when children are properly brought up, it will be difficult for them to go wayward when they grow up.
The former First Lady said the 31st DWM schools since their establishment some decades ago, had produced many Ghanaians currently managing various sectors of the economy.
She promised to provide the 31st December Movement School at Agona Swedru with bus, to facilitate its administration.
Mrs Queenster Maame Pokuaa Sawyer, Deputy Central Regional Minister and Member of Parliament for Agona East, added her voice to the importance of education, and advised parents to take good care of their children.
She said the government was doing everything possible to ensure infrastructural development in education in the country to enhance effective teaching and learning.
Mrs Felicia Adu Gyamfi, Headmistress of the Movement’s School at Agona Swedru said the school, which started with nine children in 1996, now has a student population of 500 as a result of quality teaching and learning.
She said the school had 100 percent in the maiden Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE) in the 2014.
Mrs Gyamfi urged parents to visit the school regularly to known the performance of their children.
