The Chairman of the Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC), Alhaji Mohammed Muniru-Limuna, has issued a three-day ultimatum for the arrest and prosecution of youth captured in leaked videos perpetrating acts of indiscipline.
The chairman, who doubles as the regional minister, expressed worry over the spate of indiscipline exhibited by youth in the region and promised to arrest the situation within the shortest possible time.
According to the minister, he was particularly worried about the indifferent attitude of parents towards the unacceptable behaviour of their wards, noting that the situation was gradually destroying the image of the region.
He has therefore directed the police to go after the “wee smoking girls” and “sakawa boys” who were captured in leaked videos smoking wrapped substances suspected to be Indian hemp for prosecution.
The move, he noted, would serve as a first step towards instilling discipline in the youth of the region in order to restore its lost moral values.
Promising to curb the canker, the minister noted that the conduct of the youth questioned the ability of parents to discipline their wards at home.
He indicated that he was embarking on the discipline project to restore the moral values of the region, warning that he would not spare anyone who stood in the way of the success of the project.
“I won’t mind losing my job as a minister in correcting this negative conduct that has caught up well with a section of the youth in the region,” he stated.
The minister, who was speaking on Diamond FM, a Tamale-based radio station over the weekend, bemoaned the conduct of the youth and noted that if such measures were not put in place, it could lead to greater indiscipline.
He therefore reiterated his resolve to deal with the situation head-on, regardless of who was involved and called on all opinion leaders in the metropolis to support him to nip the conduct of the youth in the bud.
It would be recalled that videos of girls and boys in their early 20s smoking wee went viral on various social media platforms a week ago.
A number of the girls were seen puffing thick smoke from the wrapped substances suspected to be Indian hemp and openly boasting about their conduct.
This was criticised by some opinion leaders, leading to an amalgamation of youth chiefs within the Tamale Metropolis arresting and shaving the girls.
The youth chiefs were supported by some worried youth who said the conduct of the girls in particular had brought a lot of disgrace to the city.
Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) ASP Ebenezer Tetteh has, however, disclosed to DAILY GUIDE that the police administration is poised for action.
He maintained that the conduct of persons captured in the videos affects everyone and noted that the collaboration of residents to unearth the root cause of this negative practice would be much appreciated.
