District Assembly bids to takeover Lake Bosomtwe

The Bosomtwe District Assembly in the Ashanti Region is at the concluding stage of negotiations with the traditional authorities at Abono to take over the management of the Lake Bosomtwe tourist site. The takeover is aimed at making the tourist facility more viable, attractive and lucrative. In spite of the fact that it is the largest and only natural lake in the sub-region, it is the belief of the assembly that the lake and adjoining facilities have not been adequately promoted and well managed to give the region the needed attention and recognition that it deserves. The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Bosomtwe, Madam Veronica Antwi-Adjei, who is leading the drive to take control told the Daily Graphic at a quiz competition held to mark World Water Day in the district that beyond anniversaries and special occasions, the lake resort attracted only a few tourists. She said at the moment, the assembly leased the facility on special occasions such as Republic Day, Christmas Day and Easter Mondays to individuals and organisations who managed the place and were charged a fee. According to her, if the discussions the assembly was holding with the traditional authorities were successful, the lake resort would receive a makeover and be rebranded and also advertised locally and internationally. Madam Antwi-Adjei said he believed that the assembly was in a better position to handle the accommodation needs of visitors than what private businesses which have put up guest houses on the shore of the lake were currently doing. She said as part of discussions with the traditional authorities, the assembly was proposing the establishment of measures that would help maintain the water body and secure it from encroachers whose illegal activities were likely to pollute the lake.
