Affirmative Action: Nana Akufo-Addo Was Not Part Of The Idea - Kennedy Agyapong

NPP firebrand, Hon. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has debunked the stance of many party folks and some pro-NDC newspapers that the 2016 NPP Flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo is responsible for the affirmative action to stop male contenders from contesting the incumbent female MPs.

According to the Assin Central Member of Parliament, the idea to stop male contenders from contesting the incumbent female MPs was from the NPP Parliamentarians as they saw the need to empower more women to go to Parliament.

The Herald Newspaper published that the NPP 2016 Presidential Candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo forced down the throat of the party’s National Chairman, Paul Afoko, General Secretary, Kwabena Agyapong and other NEC members to accept his affirmative action.

But responding to the publication on Okay FMs Ade Akye Abia Morning Show, Ken Agyapong revealed that the decision to protect the incumbent female MPs from male contenders was from all the NPP Parliamentarians and not from Nana Akufo-Addo.

To him, the fact that Nana Akufo-Addo supports the affirmative action must not be interpreted to mean he is responsible for that decision as published by The Herald Newspaper.

“So if Nana Addo says he supports the opinions of the MPs, why do you use him as someone forcing on NEC that decision? Let’s speak the truth - it was the view expressed by the NPP MPs; it was not a decision from Nana Addo…..the blame should be on we the MPs”, he revealed.

He however maintained that the idea to empower women into Parliament is not a wrong one but rather the timing for the idea is wrong since they have two months to go for the Parliamentary Primaries.

He therefore called on his colleague NEC members to go back to the issue to address the concerns raised by the majority as this is recipe for disaster if they don’t resolve it amicably; imploring that any concerned member can appeal for the issue to be addressed.
