Fishermen Go Wild; Demand Resignation Of Minister

Fishermen across the country’s coast have besieged the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development in protest against the dissolution of the Premix Committee.

According to the fishermen, the Minister, Sherry Ayittey has been making unilateral decisions without consulting them and must resign.

They also cited for instance, the dissolution of the national premix committee and the attempted plan to dissolve the landing beach committee as an unacceptable development.

Some of the fishermen who spoke to Today yesterday in Accra also questioned the abilities of the fisheries minister.

The group said, their visit to the ministry was to demand why the committee has been dissolved without their consent.

They presented a petition to the Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Benita Sena Okity-Duah.

The deputy minister promised to get the group’s concerns addressed and promised them a positive response in the shortest possible time.

Last month the Central Regional branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) accused premix committees in the region of diversion of premix fuel and lack of accountability, which it said, was creating chaos and open fights.

A statement signed by its Communications Officer consequently, appealed to President John Mahama to dissolve all premix committees in the region, and empower Mr. Aquinas Tawiah Quansah, the Regional Minister to reconstitute them.
