Chief And His Driver Shot Dead

The Chief of Chinto, near Dobro, in the Adoagyiri Nsawam municipality of the Eastern Region, and his driver were gruesomely murdered on Saturday night. Nana Kofi Mankata and his driver, Richard Asante, 38, were shot dead by unknown assailants at the chief’s rented premises at Adoagyiri, after returning from a funeral at Fotobi, near Nsawam.

Nana Mankata was shot twice in the chest and right shoulder, while Mensah was hit on the head by a bullet at close range. The incident attracted a large crowd, including relatives of the chief who wept uncontrollably. The Nsawam District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Akwasi Kankam-Boadu, who confirmed the incident to The Ghanaian Times, said his outfit received a distress call about the gruesome murder.

He said policemen dispatched to the crime scene, saw the bodies of the two people in a pool of blood.

Chief Supt. Kankam-Boadu said, the bodies were subsequently inspected and conveyed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital mortuary in Accra. He said the police have retrieved three pellets from the crime scene.
He said investigations revealed that the two had arrived from a funeral at Fotobi at about 9:30 p.m.

Chief Supt. Kankam-Boadu said the driver had parked the chief’s vehicle on the road, and both were walking to his residence when the assailants fired at them, killing them instantly. He said no arrest had been made so far, adding that the police have intensified their search for the perpetrators of the crime.

The Police Commander said investigations were on-going.
