Three out of the seven suspects who escaped from the Denu police cells are still at large.
They are Albert Asadu and Tobechucku Obina, both Nigerians, and Edem Gomala, a Ghanaian.
Those who have been rearrested so far are Stanley Wada Kabee, Kwaku Azasu, Linus Ashietey and the fourth person whose name was given only as George.
On Sunday, March 15, 2015, seven suspected criminals who were in lawful custody at the Denu Police Station for various offences escaped.
They were said to have overpowered two policemen who were on duty at the time of the ‘cell break’.
The all-male fugitives allegedly made away with two AK 47 assault rifles and 25 rounds of ammunition.
However, luck eluded six others who had attempted to escape, as they were overpowered by the police.
Intensive search Following the escape, the police mounted an intensive search for the suspects, including seeking assistance from the Togolese police.
On Wednesday, April 1, 2015, the police re-arrested three of the suspects at Aflao, while another one was arrested in the Republic of Togo last Friday, with the help of the police of that country.
The police have also retrieved one of the two AK 47 assault rifles that the fugitives bolted with.
Meanwhile, the two policemen who were on duty at the time of the escape have been interdicted, in accordance with Ghana Police Service regulations, for failing to produce the escapees within 10 days.
The Volta Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr Peterkin Yentumi Gyinae, has given an assurance that the police are leaving no stone unturned in their determination to re-arrest all the escapees and retrieve the weapon.
