Private Tertiary Institutions Not Inferior

The Rector of the University College of Management College (UCOMS), Prof. James Flolu has condemned perceptions among some sections of the public that private tertiary institutions are inferior to State sponsored ones.

He said as a result, private tertiary institutions continue to remain as last resorts for most Senior High School leavers in the country, forcing them to remain at home for years while they await admission into public universities.

Prof James Flolu, said this at the fourth Congregation of UCOMS, held at the forecourt of the Jerusalem campus of the University, last Saturday.

“There are numerous school leavers who are still at home because they have limited choices to publicly funded universities, and this is not going through for them. We need to develop a national system in which applicants choose to go to a particular University whether private or public mainly because that University will offer them opportunities to achieve their aspirations,” he said.

He revealed that over the years, UCOMS has chalked achievements in a number of inter-tertiary competitions both in Ghana and abroad.

“In July 2014, under the Bortiarnor Development Programme and Coins for Capital Project, they emerged second. At the last ENACTUS National Competition, they organsied a cleanup exercise at Bortianor and also launched the proposed fish market site partnership with TV Africa. In 2015, ENACTUS-UCOMS is undertaking a community development project, called the Bortianor Development programme, which aims to link the Fishermen Association in Bortianor to all major eateries within the Mallam-Kasoa environs,” he added.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba, Prof Kwasi Asabere-Ameyawcalled on management of UCOMS to critically examine the curricula of the University in order to update them to meet the needs of the ever changing digital world.

He called on the graduates to aim at starting their own businesses in order to become self-employed rather than waiting to be employed in the public or private sectors.

A total of 282 students graduated on Saturday and were awarded Bachelor Degrees in Accounting, Banking and Finance, Human Resource Management, Marketing and Procurement and Supply Chain Management.
