The Embassy in partnership with Immigration officers in Saudi Arabia rescued them after being caught up in the violence in that country.

 

They are expected to arrive in Ghana early next week.

 

Houthi rebels and rebels loyal of the ousted Yemen President, Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi have been engaged in fierce fighting over the control of the country. Many lives have been lost, properties have been destroyed and thousands are fleeing the country.

 

Ghana’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Alhaji Said Sinare told Citi News that the rescue operation was possible after his outfit informed security officials in the Saudi Arabia of a report they had received concerning the safety of some Ghanaians in Yemen.

 

The four Ghanaian citizens, he said, have currently been lodged into a hotel “and we are going to process all their documents with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Saudi Arabia.”

 

“By next week they will be back to Accra. But they are doing very well and they are fine. We got the information through good family friends around,” he added.

 

He was however doubtful that more Ghanaians are currently stranded in Yemen but gave the assurance that his outfit is still carrying out investigations “and if there are more Ghanaians we will do whatever we have to do and bring them back home as soon as possible.”

 

Russia, India and Indonesia are among other countries to have already carried out evacuations amid increasing international concern.

 

Over the past two weeks, fighting in Yemen has left more than 500 people dead and some 1,700 wounded, UN humanitarian chief Valerie Amos has said.
