4 Cops Die In Tema

Four Police personnel from the Rapid Deployment Force (RDF) of the Ghana Police Service at the Tema Regional Police Command were said to have died in the line of duty on the Tema-Akosombo highway.

All the four policemen died through motor accidents, with the recent one occurring two weeks ago when Constables Luke Dantour, 29, and Ransford Boakye, 25, were involved in a ghastly accident.

The deceased officers were said to be returning from a night patrol duty when the incident occurred around Shai Hills in the Shai-Osudoku District of the Greater Accra Region.

Luke will be buried at Hulo in the Jirapa District of the Upper West Region on May 14, 2015 while Ransford will be buried on May 29, 2015 at Akyem Swedru in the Eastern Region.

Luke, who served the Ghana Police Service for two years, was reported to have left behind a wife. Ransford also served for about three and half years. He reportedly died two days after the birth of his child.

Meanwhile, the lifeless bodies of the two officers have been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue pending autopsy and onward burial.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Beatrice Zaakpa Vib-Sanziri, the Regional Police Commander of Tema, disclosed these during the one week observation in Tema.

She explained that the accident that led to the demise of the officers had shocked police personnel in Tema.

“The incident happened when they had answered the last radio call and said they were going to turn around before debriefing at the Regional Police Command,” she added.

She extended the police administration’s profound condolences to the families of the deceased officers and promised that the police administration would support both families.

Pastor Paapa Yeboah, a Chaplain with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), who delivered a word of exhortation at the funeral, advised the families against accusing someone for the officers’ deaths.

Preaching from Psalm 100:3, which reads, “Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture”, he said considering the circumstance under which the officers met their untimely deaths, it was natural that the families would be angry and apportion blame.

He added that apportioning blame for everything did not speak well of a good Christian and admonished the families to rather pray to God than seek vengeance since they could not demand from God an explanation for the deaths of the policemen.

Meanwhile, the Tema Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has commenced investigations into the incident.

The incident, which has made headlines in the media over the past weeks, led to the arrest of a suspected driver to assist police in their investigations. He was later granted bail.

Sympathisers and family members who were present at the funeral in Tema included the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Ahmed Alhassan, who led a high profile police delegation from the Tema Regional Command and the Police Headquarters in Accra
