3 Die In Jafong, Namong Chieftaincy Clash

Three persons were on Sunday killed while 15 others sustained gunshots wounds in a chieftaincy conflict between Jafong and Namong, in Bunkprugu town, in the Bunkprugu/Yunyoo District of the Northern region.

A number of houses were burnt down during the clash.

The Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Limuna Mohammed Muniru, who disclosed this to The Ghanaian Times yesterday, could not tell the cause of the renewed conflict between the two communities.

He said that security had been beefed up in the community to maintain law and order.

Alhaji Muniru expressed worry about the frequent gun battles in the Bunkprugu area and instructed the security personnel deplored to the area to deal ruthlesly with the troublemakers.

An eye-witness, Moses Kombuk, said the shooting started late hours of Sunday when the lights went off following a downpour the previous day.

He said the combatants hid in the dark and fired at each other indiscriminately.

He said but for the timely intervention of the security personnel, many more lives would have been lost in the exchanges.

Last month, the two factions pledged not to engage in gun battle and rather resort to dialogue to resolve their differences.

The entire district has been under curfew for the past four years due to the numerous conflicts engulfing it.
