80 SHSs Delay Reopening Over Feeding Grants

Over 80 Senior High Schools (SHSs) in the three northern regions have delayed opening over delays in the release of feeding grants by government.

The schools are to re-open on April 21st, 2015 but the students will have to stay home a little longer until the subvention is paid.

According to some school heads, they have no option than to let the children stay at home until the funds are released.

A teacher of one of the schools who spoke on condition of anonymity said the situation if not addressed may affect their curriculum.

Meanwhile, the Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High Schools has been meeting over the issue.

Northern Regional Director of GES Alhaji Mohammed Haruna said the decision to postpone reopening of the school is in the interest of the students.

“Headmasters and headmistresses are so indebted that food suppliers have refused to give them more so it is better for the children to stay at home” he bemoaned.

Alhaji Haruna called on government to as a matter of urgency paid the feeding grants to enable them reopen school.
