Hannah Tetteh's Response To Joy FM Irresponsible.Shows How Insensitive NDC Govt Is - K Agyapong

General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyei Agyapong has described the response of the Foreign Affairs Minister, Hon. Hannah Tetteh to Accra-based Joy FM on government's position on the South Africa xenophobia as irresponsible.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hanna Tetteh last Friday morning stated in clear terms that she will not speak to Joy FM on the ongoing xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

The Kokomlemle-based radio station had sought to verify reports of the deaths of some Ghanaians in the senseless attacks in South Africa, but the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Awutu Senya West constituency curtly told the station she will only speak to Radio Gold, another private radio station based in Laterbiokorshie, a surburb of Accra, and that if Joy FM wished, it should listen to that station for government’s position on the attacks.

While some consider her rather brusque reply as "cheeky", others believe Madam Hanna Tetteh was simply "naively honest".

Commenting on the issue, the NPP's Chief Scribe told Okay FM’s "Ade Akye Abia" Morning Show host, Kwame Nkrumah Tikese that the minister acted irresponsibly contrary to the oath she swore to defend the good people of Ghana.

He pointed out that politicizing happenings in South Africa where a Foreign Affairs Minister can decide to speak to only pro-government media houses is not the way to go.

He maintained that the behavior of the ministers explains why there doesn’t seem to be any strong leadership emanating from President Mahama; stressing Ghana looks like an airplane on auto-pilot.

How; in which part of the world would a foreign affairs minister not bother finding out things at first hand such a grave incident like the one currently on-going in South Africa? You are only prepared to speak to a station that is pro-NDC; that I think is irresponsible behavior...if you have a foreign affairs minister who comes out to say this, it shows how insensitive this government is to the plight of Ghanaians,” he argued.

He therefore urged the government to provide a hotline at the Foreign Affairs Ministry so that Ghanaians who have families in South Africa can reach them for information on their status.
