The woman accused of administering DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) to her one-and-a-half-year-old baby through the anus, leading to his death at Obeyeyie, near Amasaman, has been remanded by the Amasaman Magistrate Court.

Regina Lamptey, the 23-year-old and a mother of three, whose plea to the charge of murder was not taken, was remanded in prison custody to reappear on April 30, 2015.

Fact of the case
Prosecuting, Chief inspector Ansah told the court presided over by Nana Osei Assibey that  Regina administered the enema at about 7 a.m. on April 10, 2015 and found the boy dead some minutes later in her room.

He said the grandmother of the deceased reported the incident to the  police on April 11, 2015 that her daughter had confessed administering DDT to her son.

He said the family buried the body of the baby at a cemetery at Obeyeyie.

The leftover of the DDT and the syringe used for the enema which was retrieved from Regina’s room were presented as exhibits to the court.

After the court proceedings, the Amasaman District Police Crime Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mr Sebastian?? told the Daily Graphic that since it was an indictable  offence, the docket was initially forwarded to the Attorney General’s Department for advice.

He said while the accused person was on remand at the Nsawam Prison, the police would have ample time to continue its investigations.

Mr Adigiya said the police was also preparing to exhume the body of the baby’s body to ascertain the actual cause of death.

DDT is a colourless, crystalline, tasteless and almost odourless organochloride known for its insecticidal properties. It was one of the first chemicals in widespread use as a pesticide but was banned in most developed countries in the 1970s.

The suspect, Regina Lamptey, unemployed and a mother of three,  was said to have forced the undiluted DDT into the intestines of her son with the help of a syringe.
