The Deputy Western Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhaji Fuseini Mahama has called for joint efforts to champion the party’s “Agenda 2016” in order to consolidate its chances in the region.
He said the new regional executive was aware of the daunting task of at least maintaining the party’s seats and increasing votes, which required a united front devoid of any divisive tendencies that could derail its effort.
Speaking to the Daily Graphic in Sekondi, Alhaji Mahama said, “before the new executive took office, the number of seats moved from 12 to 18, meaning we must maintain or increase the seats.”
He said with the current level of aggressive infrastructural development by government to improve the lives of the people in the region and other parts of the country, it was incumbent on members of the party especially the executive to work in harmony.
Sophisticated voters “As we speak, projects embarked upon by the government are so glaring, from various road infrastructure projects aimed at improving easy transportation of goods and services from rural to urban areas, rural electrification, school projects and health care facilities, expansion of existing structures among others” he said.
What the party in the region needs to do, Alhaji Mahama said was to build on the these successes and create a better image for the party.
“I must say that the Ghanaian voter has become so sophisticated and they compare what we say with the realities on the ground”, he said.
Grassroots level The strength of the party, Alhaji Mahama said, starts from the grassroots level; “therefore, we are devoting a lot of time to work closely to have a very formidable force at the grassroots to shift the focus from urban centers to those in the zone or wards and constituencies.”
“With the new focus I can tell you that a lot is being done to ensure that we stay focused as a political party ready to serve the people of this country by engaging in a decent politicking, and improving our chances,” he said.
He said as part of the bigger NDC team at the national level, the new executive wanted to do things that would promote the interest of the party.
Media, law court “The situation where at least provocation, members run to media to denigrate the party should be a thing of the past.”
“We have resolved that, various structures of the party for resolution of any internal issues must be respected, instead of using the media as our first port of call,” he said.
He said the NDC was bigger than any member of the party, therefore, the focus of members at all levels should exhibit commitment to the cause of the party.
“As a well organised party, the NDC has structures, if you have an issue at the branch you go to the ward or the zone, if not handled you move to the constituency and if it fails again you go to the region and then finally arrive at the national level,” he said.
“The situation where executive members at all levels, move to the radio station and call for dismissal of a district chief executive, a minister or his deputy, using intemperate language must be a thing of the past,” he said.
