Fresh graduates of the Effia Nkwanta Nursing Training School have been left high and dry after their Principal refused to identify them as students and not ghosts as the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) seeks to portray.
Mrs. Agatha Ekuban’s actions, the nurses who are currently on National Service lamented, was going to affect them gravely because their accounts have been suspended and can only be activated when a letter is presented by their Principal recognizing them as student nurses.
The students, in an interview with The New Crusading GUIDE mentioned that the affected were about 120 and thus the suspension of accounts had affected their allowances.
The students noted that while allowances of most trainees were stopped after government’s decision in March 2014, to scrap allowances of trainee nurses, some, including their own mates kept receiving payment at the detriment of the affected 120.
After describing the payment of allowances to their own colleagues as unfair treatment, they blamed the Principal for the glitches and demanded their share of the allowances.
“If this month goes by without resolving the issue, we are doomed. We have been to radio stations but all to no avail and time is far spent,” the distressed nurses lamented.
When Mrs. Agatha Ekuban, the Principal was by this paper, she noted that the fault was not from her but the CGAD. Nevertheless, she said she together with her accountant were working assiduously to resolve the issue.
She said it was not only a letter CGAD sought but some other documents which she had sent word around for all to submit to her office for onward submission to the former and the IPP department of Ministry of Health.
However, the students pointed out that there was no way that would work because those documents were to be submitted alongside a student representative or presented individually.
The students have threatened to advice themselves should the Principal refuse to do the right thing.
