ECG PRO Advocates Law On Payment Of Bills

The Ashanti Regional Public Affairs Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has called for the promulgation of a law that will compel consumers of electricity to settle their bills as soon as they receive them.

Mr. Erasmus Baidoo believes the law will, not only help address the financial difficulties of the ECG, but also prevent the relaxed attitude of customers towards the payment of bills.  The Ashanti Regional PRO of the company contends that lots of countries that have seen consistent supply of electricity have such laws in existence.

The Ashanti Regional branch of the company is said to be reeling under intense pressure to replace worn out machines, which are said to be ailing as a result of constant power fluctuations and the current ongoing load shedding system. The company is also battling to retrieve in excess of GH¢92 million being debt owed by consumers of electricity in the Ashanti Region alone.

According to the PRO, the major challenge confronting the company is the recovery of these debts, which, he said, was the only way to raise money to invest in its operations.

Mr. Baidoo, therefore, emphasised in an interview with The Chronicle that one of the major ways of ensuring prompt payment of electricity bills is for the government to promulgate a law that will compel customers to pay their bills as soon as they are served.

This, he said, would help reduce the accumulation of mountainous debts which has currently crippled the operations of the company.  He, therefore, pleaded with consumers of power to observe regular payments of their bills to facilitate operations of the company
