Hawkers Flee From Oko Vanderpuije

Hawkers in the central business district yesterday took to their heels, leaving their wares behind, upon seeing the Metropolitan Chief Executive Officer of Accra, Dr. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije.

Aware that they were not supposed to be selling on the streets, the traders, primarily second-hand clothes dealers, fumbled to pack their wares into hiding upon seeing the Mayor.

The Mayor, who was on a routine inspection of the extent of the street naming and house numbering exercise, was compelled to make a stop at the UTC traffic light, in the central business district when he noticed that traders had mounted tables in the middle of the road and doing business.

Dr. Vanderpuije, who has won the Mayor of Africa award for 2014, could not help coming of his car to ensure that the traders were whipped into line.

Known for his passion for the city, the Mayor continued along the Liberty House Street and cleared all the traders whose activities had congested the street.

The Mayor, who later briefed journalist, explained that the taskforce in charge of ensuring that the streets were cleared of hawkers is not doing the job.

He promised to monitor the situation and ensure that the traders do not come back onto the streets to deprive motorists of the smooth use of the streets.
