Twenty young men have been arrested by the Police in Accra for blocking some roads in Teshie-Nungua and its environs.
The men are believed to have acted in solidarity with some commercial bus drivers who embarked on a protest earlier on Monday.
Scores of passengers including school children were left stranded this morning due to the strike declared by the drivers in Accra.
They were protesting against a new policy by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) which requires that they, among other things, be able to write the test in English language before being issued a driver's license.
Places which were hit hard by the strike include Ashaiman, Lapaz, Odorkor, Madina and Kasoa.
More arrests are said to be taking place across the capital in an attempt by the Police to quell any security threat associated with the strike.
Confirming the incident to Citi News, the Public Relations Officer at the Accra Regional Police Command ASP Effia Tenge said the suspects will be screened and put before a court.
“For now, the Police have arrested over twenty persons who were blocking roads unlawfully and taking the law into their own hands claiming they are demonstrating and preventing drivers from working. These are offensive conducts and as a state governed by laws we must not behave this way,” she said.
She served notice that the Police will deal with persons or group of persons who endanger the peace of society adding that “we want to use this as a deterrent to others that if you want to demonstrate, there are right procedures you need to follow.”
