The Minister of Transport, Mrs Dzifa Peace Aku Ativor, has assured transport companies that the government will assist them to offset the cost of the damage they suffered as a result of last Wednesday’s flooding.
Speaking to the staff of Metro Mass Transit (MMT), the minister said she was waiting to get the cost of the damage to see how best the government could help put them back to business because of the extent of the damage. The minister expressed her concerns about the damage caused by the floods.
She reiterated that the disaster that hit the capital last Wednesday was unfortunate, and was glad when the President said he was going to take drastic measures to ensure that this disaster did not occur again.
The minister toured the Intercity State Transport Company (Intercity STC), Metro Mass Transit (MMT), the Government Technical Training Centre (GTTC) and the Neoplan Station.
During the visit to the GTTC, the Principal, Mr Edward Laryea, who said he was devastated by the extent to which the flood had damaged properties belonging to the centre, told the Daily Graphic that although he could not give a specific cost of the damage caused, he was certain it would run into millions of cedis.
The minister together with her entourage and the press had to come down and walk halfway through to the Neoplan Station at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle because of how bad the flood had left the access road.
The entire Neoplan Station was filled with waste from cars that had their oil leaking and plastic waste.
The First Trustee, Branch Number Four, of the Neoplan Station, Mr John Tetteh, told the minister that the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) had to help put the place in order.
However, he said he was making arrangements to get a fire engine to clean the place for drivers and other people who work there to resume full-scale duties.
