Accra Floods: Jacob Osei Asks: Is It By Nature That We Work Towards Our Own Destruction?

Independent Presidential Candidate, Jacob Osei Yeboah also known as ‘JOY 2012’ has said, yearly flooding in Accra can be prevented if only authorities in charge are ready to learn.

He described the flood-fuel explosion as “unfortunate” and prayed for the souls perished after wondering if Ghanaians plan for destructions rather than safety.

“I am awfully sadden today. In deep anguish for the loss of precious souls of our compatriots. My unqualified deepest condolences to Mother Ghana especially the bereaved families.

“…What I cannot fathom is whether by nature or nurture we love and work towards our own destruction?” He questioned.

The death toll from the deadly Accra floods and explosion at a Goil filling station at Kwame Nkrumah Circle Wednesday has hit over 150 and still continuing.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said its preliminary investigations into the disastrous explosion at the Goil fuel station indicates that valves that were not properly tightened caused the fuel to gush out.

This allowed the fuel to float on the surface of the flood water, and then came into contact with fire in a distance of about 100 meters from the station.

With a heavy downpour on Wednesday, several places in Accra got flooded destroying properties and killing others.

Many have blamed the flooding on bad drainage system and inappropriate structure of building on water ways.

In an interview with Peacefmonline.com JOY 2012 hope government will find solutions to curb the situation which is now an albatross.

“35 years ago a few people were given firing squad. Dark clouds covered the nation. In tears of heart, today's dark clouds should not be made to cover Ghana any more. The national horrific disaster is a symptom of underlying problems both physical and spiritual.

“…Let wisdom bring understanding that Ghanaians will have the will to deal with these perennial menace of shedding innocent blood,” he said.
