No Meeting Of NPPs Steering Committee For Two Months

Since the New Patriotic Party steering committee meeting convened and chaired by the party’s 1st National Chairperson, Mr Freddi Blay in May this year, the party has not had another.

It’s two months ago since that meeting even though party sources say, steering committee meetings should normally be called at least once a week.

The May meeting was greeted with alarm by pro-Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyapong factions in the party because Mr. Freddie Blay was said to have called the Committee meeting, without recourse to party’s Chairman Paul Afoko.

As chairman, Mr Afoko is constitutionally mandated to convene and preside over all meetings of the National Delegates Conference, the National Congress, the National Council, the National Executive Committee and the Steering Committee of the National Executive Committee.

Mr. Blay had indicated that he attempted but failed to get in touch with Mr Afoko and Mr Agyepong for the May meeting.
Since then there have been meetings of the NPP regional executives meeting at Bolga on the back of the burial of late NPP upper East Regional Chairman, Alhaji Adams Mahama but that body has no particular position in party’s constitution.

The calls for a formal meeting to resolve the confusion in the party have however been unceasing.

In his last press conference for instance, the party’s flagbearer, Nana Akufo Addo indicated a meeting of party executives would take place to resolve the issues pitching party member against party member.

There is no telling as to whether the party chairman would convene a steering committee meeting soon but in a recent letter to the Electoral Commission, he re-affirmed his position as the official head of the party when he asked the EC to disregard any communication from NPP which is not from him or Secretary General, Kwabena Agyepong.
