Lets Sustain Sanitation Exercise MP

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Takoradi Constituency, Okyere Kobinah Darko Mensah, has advocated strongly for the sustenance of the ongoing national sanitation campaign.

Consequently, he has appealed to government and the people of Ghana to make the campaign a collective responsibility.

He said the country needs the exercise to avoid the annual floods experienced in the nation.

Speaking to The Finder in an interview on the sideline of the national sanitation exercise which was held in Takoradi on Saturday, Mr Darko said the loss of over 200 lives in last week’s disaster in Accra should be a wake-up call for all of us to clean our environment on daily basis

He noted, “Floods can happen anywhere if we don't take care of our environment very well. Apart from the plastic waste, which is a major problem, our drains are constantly choked with sand, thus impeding the flow of water.”

He called on city authorities to collaborate with engineers to impress upon contractors to create space between the gutters, to allow easy access during clean-up exercises.

The MP also advised against the indiscriminate disposal of refuse, and urged the city authorities to constantly monitor the conduct of the people and bring offenders to book.
