Today can report that the Ga South Municipal Hospital in the Greater Accra region has since Saturday, June 5, 2015 recorded 15 fresh cases of cholera.
This latest case of cholera outbreak follows last Wednesday’s heavy downpour that hit Accra, the nation’s capital.
The affected persons who were 10 males and 5 females were reported to be residents of Santa-Maria Last Stop, Anyaa Gbawey, Awoshie and Mallam, three of the worst hit areas during the flood.
Speaking to Today on their hospital beds, some of the victims who pleaded condition of anonymity alleged that they accidentally swallowed some of the flood water while struggling to escape.
“Some also complained of diahorrea and vomiting after eating foods they bought from the roadside in their neighbourhoods because they had nowhere to cook.
They indicated that cholera outbreaks in Ghana were as a result of the country’s failure to deal with sanitation issues.
According to them, tackling issues relating to water, sanitation and hygiene should be a way of life and expressed worry that the recent floods may give rise to more cholera cases if care was not taken.
According to them, the rate may increase adding that there is the need to intensify efforts to address the problem.
The nurses and physicians lamented that the hygiene situation in Accra was poor since people defecate indiscriminately in gutters.
They advised residents living in the worst affected areas during the flood to properly cook their food and also ensure that waste and sewage were properly managed and disposed off quickly.
More than hundred deaths were recorded by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) following the floods that hit parts of Accra on Wednesday, June 3, 2015.
