No Relief Items For Dansoman Flood Victims One Week After Disaster

Flood victims at Dansoman in the Greater Accra Region have bared their teeth at managers of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) for denying them support one week after the deadly floods that swept parts of Accra and claimed over 150 lives.

Their beef is that after surviving the deadly flood and losing property to the flood waters, they were expecting NADMO to come to their aid by providing them with relief items such as mattresses, clothes and others following numerous pledges and donations from the government and many entities from the private sector, but no support had come.

A week after the disaster, scores of flood victims in the affected areas at Dansoman are still counting their losses with some victims still sleeping in churches, with friends and open places that were not affected by the disaster.

The worst affected communities were Gleffe, Ebenezer down, Shiabu, Gbegbese, Manponse, Sakaman, parts of Mamprobi and other surroundings - all in the Dansoman area.

Some of the victims who spoke to the DAILY HERITAGE expressed their anger and frustration at officials of NADMO for neglecting them, adding that, it appeared the whole concentration was on the accident at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle and Adabraka.

“Is it because we did not record any death in our area or that the media did not report much on our plight? We are not looking for money or property, but at least the immediate items that can put us in shape before we recover from the trauma and shock,” they angrily said.

They complained bitterly that apart from Gleffe where the police and some government officials visited a day after the floods to assess the situation in a helicopter, one week down the line, no NADMO official has made an attempt to register the affected victims or “provide us with anything.”

Some residents at Gleffe as at yesterday morning were busily washing soaked and dirty clothes as a result of the floods, while several others were seen with plastic containers scooping water from their rooms.

One of the frustrated victims, Alexander Ebo, an Auto Engineer at Gleffe could not hide his frustration and attacked the media for failing to report their plight after the disaster.

The head of Sackitey family, Nii Sackitey, narrating his ordeal to the paper thanked God for his life and that of his family members after their house was totally submerged by the floods.

Mr. Sackitey revealed that one week after the incident; the whole family still sleeps in an open place without mattresses and clothes.

“Because of the volume of the water, it will take us another one week only if it doesn’t rain again for the water to dry up,” he lamented.

He is, therefore, appealing to NADMO officials to assist them with mattresses, clothes, water and other basic necessities.
