Opanyin Agyekum: I Still Maintain My Stand

Despite government reversing the four-year term for Senior High School (SHS) to the previous three-year period, Prof. Kofi Agyekum, Lecturer at the Linguistics Department, University of Ghana, Legon says he still maintains his stand that, the four-year system is better than the three years. Speaking on Peace FMs morning show, Kokrokoo, he said it is a pity he cannot do anything about it or challenge the governments judgement. According to him, the three year system is very short and therefore puts pressure on both the teachers and students making teachers rush through teaching, in order to complete the syllabi to prepare the students for exams, instead of imparting knowledge to them. As an experienced teacher, he explained that schooling and teaching is not about examination, but rather for students to be well-trained to acquire knowledge in order to fit into the society and help in the development of the country. The Professor, who is also a leading member of the Ghana Peace Council, was one of the people who openly supported or hailed the previous government for bringing the duration of SHS to four-year term. But on the assumption of office and in fulfillment of its manifesto pledge, the NDC government gave an indication of reverting to the three year duration.
