Teller Pays Back GH20,000

Mrs. Rosemary Okai, 34, the teller at one of the leading banks in Accra who is suspected to have embezzled GH114,000, on Tuesday paid GH20,000 as part of the amount to the police. A source at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) at the Police headquarter, in Accra told the Times yesterday that Rosemary has subsequently been granted police enquiry bail with two sureties. The source said the bail was also granted on the grounds that she is nursing a six-month old baby who is not feeling well. The source said the police were investigating the case, contending that they were waiting for some documents from the bank after which, Rosemary will be processed for court. Rosemary Okai is suspected to have embezzled the money between June and this month. She has been a full time staff of the bank for barely a year after being engaged as a casual worker for four years. Superintendent Maame Yaa Tiwaa Danso, Head of the Commercial Crime Unit at the police headquarters, told the Times on Tuesday that preliminary investigations showed that the suspect deposited only part of the monies she received from customers into the banks account after crediting the accounts of the customers. Okai allegedly admitted that she sometimes took some money home but denied embezzling GH114,000 although she reportedly told the investigators that she was prepared to refund the amount.
