MP Aspirant In Trouble

New Patriotic Party (NPP) executives for Kwesimintsim Constituency in the Western Region have urged the National Steering Committee and the Appeals Committee of the party to refer the case involving one Joseph Mensah which is before them, to the police for investigations.

A statement issued in Takoradi dated June 16 and signed by Eric Bruce-Amartey Jnr. and Abdul-Hakeem Buhari Osman, Constituency Youth Organzer and Secretary respectively, the executives said the case involving Mr. Joseph Mensah, a Parliamentary Aspirant, is purely criminal and must be treated as such.

They said Mr. Mensah’s action for which a petition was issued against his eligibility as an aspirant as well as his subsequent actions after the petition to clear himself, have dented the image of the party.

“As constituency executives, we find it plausibly necessary for the leadership of the party to resuscitate the image and integrity of the NPP by inviting the police to investigate this matter since it borders purely on criminality”, the statement said.

“The Forensic Unit of the Ghana Police Service will do the party a great deal of service by inviting the following for investigations: the western regional Chairman, western regional secretary, the IT Department of the NPP’s headquarters, Accra; some non-elected members of staff at the national headquarters and the parliamentary election committee members”, it added.

“This investigation would further deter the recurrence of such issues and would not inflate the membership numbers in favour of our political opponents”, the statement underscored.

It would be recalled that some five members of the party in the Kwesimintsim constituency petitioned the national executive body of the party against the eligibility of Mr. Joseph Mensah as an aspirant for the party’s June 13 parliamentary primaries.

Mr. Mensah is alleged to be holding a questionable party membership card, though he claims to be a genuine party member.

He is also alleged to have attempted to enter the details on the said party card into the party’s National Membership Data Base.

Mr. Mensah had also claimed to be one of the party’s patrons in the Western Region but had been unable to produce ample evidence to prove his assertion.

Again, he claimed to have paid his dues to the national headquarters of the party but had never paid any dues at the regional and constituency offices of the party.

The National Steering Committee subsequently upheld the petition brought against his eligibility.

Mr. Mensah however appealed against the ruling, compelling the party to suspend the parliamentary primaries for Kwesimintsim constituency.

The appeal is still pending while the primaries for that constituency have been rescheduled to June 27.
