Juju And Court Injunction Fly At Kdua Poly SRC Election

The disqualification of six aspirants in the keenly contested Students Representative Council (SRC) election at Koforidua Polytechnic scheduled for today has compelled some of the aggrieved aspirants to resort to various means of seeking justice.

One of the disqualified aspirants who want to remain anonymous told the DAILY HERITAGE that, he would resort to juju in his home town to seek redress over his disqualification.

"As for me, going to court is a waste of time, I have traditional justice in my hometown, how can you disqualify me without any tangible reasons unmindful of the money spent in my campaign?”

However, David Odoei Nii Gartey Amu Quarcoo, popularly known as ONGA, one of the aggrieved aspirants for the position of SRC President, has placed a court injunction on the exercise.

The aggrieved aspirant claimed he had been disqualified unlawfully by the vetting committee. Mr. Quarcoo who was slightly ahead in the race as far as support base is concerned has been downgraded after the botched vetting making him ineligible to contest.

The aspirant was dismissed by the vetting committee on grounds of "impersonation" because the name he used to file his documents varied from his official name in the data of the Institution.

According to the Committee, the name "David Nii Amu Quarcoo" is the official name captured in the data of the institution, hence, the name" David Odoei Nii Gartey Amu Quarcoo" is a strange name which raises concerns of impersonation.

Mr. Quarcoo attempted to challenge the decision of the vetting committee on grounds that he had sworn an affidavit over change of name on May 27, 2015 in accordance with the provisions of the statutory Declaration Act 389 of 1971.

The committee requested for a copy of the affidavit within six hours which he obliged, but the committee had already taken an entrenched decision aimed at disqualifying the aspirant.

Mr Quarcoo who is unhappy with the decision of the committee has sought a court injunction to freeze today’s election until the matter is resolved.

Out of the eight persons who filed to contest the election, six have been disqualified including Mr. Quarcoo. The disqualification has been attributed to political interference.

Supporters of some of the disqualified aspirants are angry over the situation and have threatened to cause mayhem during the election to disrupt the exercise.

The chairman of the Koforidua Polytechnic Electoral Commission, Yaw Kussi Owusu who doubles as a member of the vetting committee has been accused of engineering the disqualification of the six aspirants for political reasons.

However, attempts made to get his reaction failed, but the Chief Justice of Koforidua Poly SRC, Kekeli Patrick Agbeko, explained that, the Committee did a fair Job .He said his office had not been served with any court injunction, hence, the election will be held as planned.
