Sodom And Gomorrah Demo: I Didnt Run Away Cephas Arthur

Director of Public Relations of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Cephas Arthur has rubbished claims that the police run away from demonstrators at Accra slum Sodom and Gomorrah because they were overwhelmed by the intensity of the protestors.

According to him, as security men and women who have sworn an oath to protect the nation, they stood their grounds and brought the volatile situation under control.

Hundreds of dwellers in Ghana’s biggest shanty town have been left homeless as city authorities demolish illegal structures to pave way for the dredging of the Odaw drainage.

The demolition exercise is to pave way for the dredging of the Korle loaagoon to allow free flow of water into the sea and prevent the annual floods that hit the capital city. A deadly flood and fire explosion on June 3 claimed over 150 lives.

The now homeless aggrieved migrants took to the Central Business District of Accra Monday morning for a massive demonstration to register their displeasure at Saturday’s demolition of their homes and businesses.

It has been reported that some personnel of the Ghana Police Service including Superintendent Cephas Arthur had to run for their lives after residents of Old Fadama pelted them with stones and chased them with clubs.

But Cephas Arthur on Asempa FM Monday, denied those allegations, saying “I didn’t run for my life as it has been purported".

“All we did was to withdraw and allow other personnel to take over” he stated.

Though he expressed grave disappointment at the development, he assured that his outfit will do all it can to prevent a recurrence.
