Deputy Local Government and Rural Development Minister, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye has accused the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) of being behind the violent demonstration in Ghana’s biggest slum, Sodom and Gomorrah.

The Deputy Minister who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Odododiodio alleged on Asempa FM Monday that his political opponents incited the angry youth affected by the demolition to embark on the demonstration.

“I want to tell those who are seeking to take political advantage of this that they won’t succeed…if there is a situation like this on hand, why would you go there and distribute your party T-Shirts, flags and placards to them to demonstrate…you won’t succeed…,” Nii Lantey alleged.

The angry residents who were victims of Saturday, 19th June, 2015 demolition took to the streets to protest against the exercise. Others also held a press conference simultaneously to drum home their grievances.

The demonstration turned violent with reports indicating that police officers dispatched to the scene to keep calm had to run for dear lives.

But all these, the Deputy Minister said should be blamed on the NPP and its elected Parliamentary candidate for 2016, Nii Lante Bannerman who he said incited the residents.

“If this is the tangent he seeks to go by, then I can promise he won’t succeed…,” he said.

He further claimed that three sheds that he built at the venue for the NDC supporters in the area and the NPP office were part of the structures demolished.

NPP deny

The NPP’s 2016 Parliamentary candidate for the constituency, Nii Lante Bannerman reacting to the allegation called on the Deputy Minister not to envelope him into his ‘childish and inferior political tactics’.

“I have not given anything to anyone, I have not been at the location, I am still on a thank you tour…,” he said.

He further called on Ghanaians to lay the blame on the relocation of Ghana’s biggest slum to the ‘ineptitude on the part of the NDC.’

Nii Lante said Ghana would have overcome the Sodom and Gomorrah relocation if the NDC has supported former President John Agyekum Kufuor to relocate the slum dwellers to Adjen Kotoku in 2007.
