A government communications team member, Eric Ametor Quarmyne has described as needless the hullaballoo in asking Destination Inspection Companies (DICs) to help government pay-up judgement debt owed Bankswitch.
In his view, the proposal by Trade and Industry Minister, Dr. Ekow Spio Garbrah to the DICs is in the supreme interest of the state.
“Do you know Bankswitch can go to court and garnishee our properties oversees? We will not sit down and put our hands in our lapse and watch this happen,” he stressed.
Trades Minister has been heavily criticized for writing to five Destination Inspection Companies to pay an amount of $ 35 million each to help defray a judgement debt of 197 million cedis owed Bankswitch.
This, critics including the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) amounts to bribery.
But speaking on Asempa FM Monday, Ametor Quarmyne said the letter by the Trade Minister does not amount to bribery.
He noted that the proposal to the DICs to help government pay off the debt is just like offering concessions to a mining company.
Rather than condemning Spio- Garbrah, the NDC man said he [Spio] should be applauded for taking steps to save Ghana.
“These Destination Inspection Companies make huge sums of monies so there is nothing wrong with helping government pay off debts in exchange for contracts” he stated.
Ametor Quarmyne said government will jealously protect the public purse to ensure Ghanaians are not shortchanged.
