Uniformed men from the Police and military were back at Old Fadama, popularly called Sodom and Gomorrah, Tuesday, to supervise the completion of a demolition exercise that began Saturday.
The first part of the demolition exercise left thousands displaced which triggered a chain of violent protests by the affected residents.
On Monday the affected residents took over the streets of Accra, blocked some roads, assaulted innocent people and vandalized properties in reaction to the demolition.
They claimed they were not consulted before the demonstration took place. Some 35 people have so far been arrested for the violent protests.
On Tuesday, Joy News’ Michaela Anderson who was at Sodom Gomorrah reported that ramshackles that serve as homes for the residents are being run over by earth moving equipment.
The security forces fully armed with their riot control equipment are present watching as the bulldozers down the properties of the slum dwellers.
The victims, apparently terrified and subdued by the presence of the security forces look on with pity as their properties crumble.
Deputy Local Government Minister Nii Lante Vanderpuye told Joy News Monday, the AMA who are embarking on the demolition exercise will be meeting the residents to agree on the scope of the demolition.
He admitted the AMA went beyond its scope during Saturday’s demolition exercise, adding the vulnerable groups who were affected would be sheltered albeit, temporarily.
