ATV Pilots Use Of Local Dialects As Medium Of Instruction In Basic Schools

ATV a channel which has its mother company as First Digital Television and a member of GroupeNduom (GN) has pioneered the use of local language to teach Basic School students.

ATV broadcasts teaching and learning program to viewers in Fante.. Called ‘Mmofra Nyimdzee’ the program features the use of Akan language (Fante dialect) to teach the various subjects from Mathematics, Religious and Moral Education (RME), Social Studies etc..

The program is in the second season and airs at 5:30-6:00 P.M. from Monday – Friday with an Omni bus on Sundays at 10:30am.

It is filmed in Elmina at the Monica Yorke School. So far this programme has gained a lot of public attention with scores of Ghanaians commending ATV for the initiative.

It is against this background that the TV channel wishes to indicate its preparedness to partner the Ministry of Education to implement government’s policy on the use of local dialects as medium of instruction in basic schools.

The ministry has directed all basic schools to desist from using English as the medium of instruction as part of a campaign to improve reading and learning in the country.

Under the project only pupils in Kindergarten to Primary three (3) will be taught mainly with the local languages. English is to be introduced gradually as early grade reading assessment will begin at Primary four.

This is intended to help young learners acquire proficiency in literacy and numeracy especially at the foundation level and to have a solid basis for continued education. It is envisioned that the project would tremendously improve the educational standards in the country.

The Education Ministry has started encouraging compliance with the policy. ATV is prepared to partner the Ministry of Education to implement the policy on the use of local language as medium of instruction in basic schools.

The feedback from viewers so far has been very encouraging and we would recommend that the Ministry of Education takes a good look at our local language instruction program.

We hereby urge the general public to keep watching ATV’s exciting programs such as MbofraNyimdzee, Medee Na Eye De, Asem Yi Di Ka, Kanawu, Omanyi Mu Te Wo Sen, Sika Sem, AnigyeKrom, among so much more.

We wish to encourage everyone to get the First Digital decoder and NCA Approved FD Combo decoders to experience Ghanaian brewed content for your viewing pleasure.
