KNUST Alumnus Attempts Suicide

Residents of Kumasi were yesterday witness to a stunning incident when a man climbed to the top of a two-storey building, threatening to commit suicide over the redevelopment of Kumasi Kejetia.
Mr. Ernest Birmeh, an alumni of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) reportedly tied himself up with a rope in an attempt to commit suicide.

It took the swift intervention of the Police personnel from the Zongo Police Station under the Manhyia Divisional headquarters to talk to the 49-year-old to card his intention.

ASP Rev Dr. Nana S. Nyamekye Andane-Ameyaw, who confirmed the story, told The Chronicle that the man was in their custody and that Birmeh had given a statement to the police. Mr. Birmeh, according to the police chief, claims he was creating awareness to societal pressure and employment creation and was not attempting suicide.

ASP Rev Andane-Ameyaw told The Chronicle that Birmeh, a holder of National Higher Diploma and Degree in Psychology respectively, has been interrogated and has shown the police some letters he sent to the police and other offices about his awareness and employment campaign.

Asked about the next step of action by the police, the Zongo Police boss noted that calls will be made to the said offices to unravel the veracity of the letters he presented to the police. ASP Andane-Ameyaw stated that the former KNUST student will be cautioned to earn a permit from the police before he embarks on any intended awareness creation exercise.
