New EC boss: Sir John wants Mahama To Explain Appointment

A former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is demanding that President Mahama explains the procedures he undertook before appointing a new Chairman for the Electoral Commission.

Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie is of the view that since the president is mandated by the Constitution to select an EC chair, it would be appropriate for him to as a matter of urgency explain to the country what informed his recent appointment.

“Yes, I’m very impressed on this new appointment but I want the president to come out and explain to the general public how he selected the new EC chair so that we can be assured of total neutrality during elections” he said.

President John Mahama on Thursday announced the appointment of Charlotte Osei as the new chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana.

Mrs Osei is taking over from Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan who has retired after almost two decades as Chairman of the Commission.

Commending the president for appointing a woman as the new EC chair, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie popularly known as Sir John stressed the need for all political parties to be made aware of the background as well as the academic credentials of the new EC boss.

Sir John recalled Mrs. Osei’s call for electoral reforms during her time as head of the National Commission for Civic Education.

“I know this woman has been championing the electoral reforms in the country and so I’m assured that she will never disappoint us.

“Even if she is a political person, I know she will discharge her duties very well but the president should still tell us how he went about the procedures” he insisted on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Friday June 26, 2015.
