Dont Work For NDC; Else You Would Be Cursed- Wontumi Tells New EC Boss

As Mrs. Charlotte Osei replaces Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan as the new Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana, she has been cautioned to remain resolute during duty hours and do things which would positively benefit the entire nation.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman for the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako made this call shortly after news emerged that Mrs. Osei has been given the mandate to act as the new EC boss.

In an interview with Peacefmonline.com, Mr. Antwi-Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, asked the newly elected EC boss not to throw his caution to the wind.

In accordance with Article 70(2) of the 1992 Constitution, President Mahama appointed Mrs. Charlotte Osei as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana. This was captured in a statement signed by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah.

But Chairman Wontumi warned that as Ghanaians prepare for the next general elections, political parties especially the National Democratic Congress would try all they can to coerce her to work on their side and this he claims, might not augur well for the majority of Ghanaians looking for a change of government.

“Don’t work for the NDC; else you would be cursed. Ghanaians are looking forward to have a change of government so be natural and do things which would have your name written in good books”, he cautioned.

Wontumi went further to warn Mrs. Charlotte Osei not to repeat the mistakes other electoral officers in neighbouring countries like Côte d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso whose partiality set their nation on fire.

Mrs. Osei, a lawyer with considerable experience in public service management, institutional reform and also has expertise in corporate law, banking, insurance, project financing and public-private partnerships.

The new EC Chairperson holds a Masters in Law (LLM) from Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada and a Masters in Business Leadership from the University of South Africa, Pretoria. She obtained an LLB (Hons) from the University of Ghana in 1992.

Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan is retiring from the EC after almost two decades as Chairman of the National Electoral Commission.
