Talensi Results Were Doctored - Candidate

The People's National Convention candidate in the just ended Talensi by-election, Dr Michael Wumbeogo has challenged the results of the elections.

He has consequently decided to apply to the Electoral Commission (EC) for a recount of the votes and according to him, if the EC fails to grant his request, he will contest the election results in court.

This is because, he alleges that the results "were manipulated and doctored during collation of the results" saying all we want us to be given fair results.

"At one of the polling stations for instance one of the eight candidates in the race had zero but at the collation center that candidate was given 73; so how come" Dr Wumbeogo said in an interview with Graphic Online’s Upper East Regional Correspondent, Vincent Amenuve on Wednesday.

He was speaking in reaction to the results declared by the EC on Tuesday at Tongo..

"I am looking at the fact that the entire process was fraught with intimidation by the Azorka boys of the NDC; I can say about 5000 eligible voters did not vote because they were afraid to do so" he lamented.

Dr Wumbeogo further intimated that "these things are not strange to us because it happens in every election; the NDC and the NPP have engaged in massive intimidation."

He said as a result of what happened, some residents were peeved and were "swearing that they would not come out and vote in future elections."

"The district is so poor and deprived and yet there is a lot of propaganda by the NDC and the NPP and I thought that the electorate would have used this by-election to teach them a lesson; but having said there is gainsaying in the fact that the NDC would have still won the race".

PNC General Secretary

The General Secretary of the PNC, Mr Bernard Mornah on his part challenged the results declared by the EC when its officials were about to declare the final results on Tuesday at the collation center in Tongo

According to him, it was clear that "consistently in every stronghold of the PNC there were a lot of rejected ballots" and called for a recount of the ballots.

"I am therefore certain that but for those irregularities at polling stations in our stronghold we would have beaten the New Patriotic Party (NPP)" he further contended.

He further indicated that the difference between the PNC's candidate and that of the NPP was just about nine votes.

Mr.W uni Thomas Pearson Duanab ,51, of the NPP polled 6,845 votes to beat the PNC's Dr Wumbeogo Michael Namalteng, 43, who got 6,836 votes.

The NDC's Benson Tongo Baba, 67, a retired Deputy Director General of the Ghana Prisons Service polled 10,366 votes representing 42.31 to recapture the seat for the NDC.
