Outbreak Of Diseases Looms In New Juaben

There may be possible outbreak of diseases in the New Juaben Municipality of the Eastern Region as the municipality has been engulfed in filth due to strike action by workers of Zoomlion.

The workers, chiefly drivers of the waste management company, have been on strike for more than one week now over more than five months unpaid salaries.

The strike action, has led to heaps of refuse in every part of the municipality. Solid waste from stores operating in the central business point of the municipality has piled up along the streets, littering the streets and roads and creating health hazards.

Store operators near some of the refuse collection points have closed down their stores as they cannot bear the stench out from the refuse.

Residents in the area have expressed worry over the development calling on government for immediate intervention. Residents are furious over the condition expressing fear that, cholera and other communicable diseases may strike.

Meanwhile, authorities of Zoomlion have declined comment on the matter directing the media to contact the national office for explanation.

The New Juaben Municipal Environmental Officer, Francis Kwame ---Sarfo, in an interview with the DAILY HERITAGE, admitted that, drivers and some workers of Zoomlion are on strike over salary arrears.

He explained that efforts by a delegation from the Assembly led by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Dr Kwaku Owusu Acheampong, to get confirmation from the regional office of the Zoomlion Company Limited, were not successful since management had left to Accra for a meeting.

He however stated that, though the assembly was limited with resources, it had been resolved at a meeting held on Tuesday at the MCE's office for the Assembly to collect and dispose the refuse in the municipality as it awaits the striking workers resuming operation.
