Supply Of Meat To Chief Sparks Shootout In Bimbilla? (Witness Account)

Disagreement, over which household butchers should supply meats to in Bimbilla, has pushed some residents in the town to pick up guns and fire it at each other.

Bimbilla is a small town in the Northern part of the country and happens to be the capital of the Nanumba North district.

An eyewitness (Awal, real name withheld for security reasons) who spoke to Peace FM revealed that as at 10:30 am, sporadic gun-fire could be heard across the town. The situation was growing worse even at the time the witness spoke to the news team during the Midday Bulletin, and according to him; the daily supply of meat to the chief’s palace generated the chaos.

He explained that the supply of the animal product to the current chief had angered another faction of kinsmen in the area.

According to him, the ‘unhappy’ kinsmen had constantly warned the butchers to stop the practice of supplying the new chief with fresh meat and channel the product to the household of the late chief who was murdered.

But the witness, who spoke to PeaceFM whiles hiding in his room, explains the calls had fallen on deaf ears and this sparked the internal conflict which is beyond the control of the police and military in the area.

He claims the police in the area have been overpowered by the groups involved in the rift and as for the soldiers in the area, “they are less than 10”.

In a related development, the Northern Regional Police Command has confirmed reports of the shooting incident, but no arrests have so far been made.

PRO Assistant Superintendent of Police Ebenezer Tetteh, who affirmed the report said “as we speak now there is sporadic shooting in the Bimbilla township."
