The National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Kofi Adams, has argued that the NDC won last Tuesday’s by-election because of a good strategy and massive development in Talensi in the Upper East Region.
He said another key strategy that won the day for the NDC was its unity of purpose, from the Presidency to the lowest ranked cadre.
Mr Adams stated this in an interaction yesterday to explain how the NDC and its parliamentary candidate, Mr Benson Tongo Baba, aka Better Talensi Baba, won the seat for the NDC.
Results The former Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service and former Ghana Olympics Committee boss, B.T Baba polled 10,366 votes, representing 42.31 per cent of the total votes to win the seat, while the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Wuni Thomas Buanab polled 6,845 votes representing 27.94 per cent.
The People’s National Convention’s (PNC) Micheal Wombeogo Namalteng followed closely with 6,836, representing 27.90 per cent of the total votes.
The other candidates, Joseph Toatoba from the Progressive Peoples Party (PPP) obtained 214 votes, representing 0.87, while Dennis Atiah Tambil from the Independent Peoples Party (IPP) polled 38 votes. James Mambora Doubil from the New Vision Party (NVP) managed 93 votes.
Philip Bameezina Yaro from the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) and Isaac Kumgasore from the United Front Party (UFP) polled 58 and 49 votes respectively.
NDC votes go up Explaining further why the NDC won the Talensi seat, Mr Adams pointed out that President Mahama was not divisive and believed in unity.
He said the NDC went into the Talensi election with a common goal to showcase what the party had done in terms of massive development for the constituents.
Mr Adams mentioned road networks, particularly the Talensi to Bawku road, ongoing development programmes at community day secondary schools within the constituency and the dredging of the Darre Dam as classic examples.
According to the NDC National Organiser, these and many others, contributed significantly to the NDC recapturing the seat from the NPP.
Interestingly, Mr Adams explained that comparatively, it was reassuring to observe that while the votes of the NDC increased from the 2012 Election, that of the NPP reduced significantly.
In the 2012 Election in which the NPP won, the NPP parliamentary candidate garnered 11,380 votes, representing 41 per cent whilst the NDC got 9,119 representing 33.22 per cent.
Appreciation He expressed his appreciation to the President, John Dramani Mahama, and the entire rank and file of the NDC for the efforts they put in to recapture the seat which he said naturally belonged to the NDC.
Background The Talensi seat became vacant after the incumbent NPP MP, Mr Robert Mosore, was installed paramount chief of the area.
